The Complexity of Probiotics and Prebiotics

November 21, 2011

Benign bacteria and viruses and yeasts……residing in the gut, cooperative living at its best, till we destroy it through wrong food and bad eating habits. Not to mention modern drugs. Now we are all looking for a way to restore this balance.

Probiotics are “live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” WHO definition. Microorganisms are tiny living organisms — such as bacteria, viruses, and yeasts — that can be seen only under a microscope.

Prebiotics are nondigestible food substancea that stimulate good bacteria to activate in our colon’s.

Expert opinion holds that when probiotics and prebiotics mix together, they form a synbiotic.

The most exciting but not fully proven theory is that probiotics could by introducing good “balancing” bacteria in your system actually improve your immune system. All research into the full benefit of probiotics is in an early stage with nothing conclusive available right now.

The leading every day probiotic food is YOGURT! And now to some extent we understand why we were made to eat yoghurt when we had diarrhea. There are definite benefits and more studies are underway.
