Indian Junk or Western Junk, It’s all the same

January 31, 2011

A new study just out indicates that Indians on traditional diets are just as much at risk of cardio metabolic disorders – diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol – as their western counterparts. At one time, experts said, that increase in affluence plus the ‘westernization’ of urban Indian life styles, which brought with it an addiction to ‘junk’ foods, were big contributors to the increase in some of these chronic illnesses. Indians were following Americans and taking a big health dive down the cliff! Globalization and westernization were cultural and dietary evils. Not true it seems. Evidently, we have enough in our traditional diets to give us these problems all on our own.  While the study (link given below) is not definitive in its findings, it is a good indicator of why we need to take a closer look at what we eat and how much we eat. A lifetime vigil really if we want some health risks to either disappear or remain under control.
